چکیده

PURPOSE To develop a simple method for combining phase images from multichannel coils that does not require a reference coil and does not entail phase unwrapping, fitting or iterative procedures. THEORY AND METHODS At very short echo time, the phase measured with each coil of an array approximates to the phase offset to which the image from that coil is subject. Subtracting this information from the phase of the scan of interest matches the phases from the coils, allowing them to be combined. The effectiveness of this approach is quantified in the brain, calf and breast with coils of diverse designs. RESULTS The quality of phase matching between coil elements was close to 100% with all coils assessed even in regions of low signal. This method of phase combination was similar in effectiveness to the Roemer method (which needs a reference coil) and was superior to the rival reference-coil-free approaches tested. CONCLUSION The proposed approach-COMbining Phase data using a Short Echo-time Reference scan (COMPOSER)-is a simple and effective approach to reconstructing phase images from multichannel coils. It requires little additional scan time, is compatible with parallel imaging and is applicable to all coils, independent of configuration. An illustrated comparison of processing methods for MR phase imaging and QSM: combining array coil signals and phase unwrapping

Phase imaging benefits from strong susceptibility effects at very high field and the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) afforded by multi-channel coils. Combining the information from coils is not trivial, however, as the phase that originates in local field effects (the source of interesting contrast) is modified by the inhomogeneous sensitivity of each coil. This has historically been addressed...

Assessment of the Characteristics of MRI Coils in Terms of RF Non-Homogeneity Using Routine Spin Echo Sequences

Introduction: One of the major causes of image non-uniformity in MRI is due to the existence of  non-homogeneity in RF receive and transmit. This can be the most effective source of error in  quantitative  studies  in  MRI  imaging.  Part  of  this  non-homogeneity  demonstrates  the  characteristics of RF coil and part of it is due to the interaction of RF field with the material being  imaged...

Application of phase consistency to improve time efficiency and image quality in dual echo black-blood carotid angiography.

There is a considerable similarity between proton density-weighted (PDw) and T2-weighted (T2w) images acquired by dual echo fast spin-echo (FSE) sequences. The similarity manifests itself not only in image space as correspondence between intensities of PDw and T2w images, but also in phase space as consistency between phases of PDw and T2w images. Methods for improving the imaging efficiency an...

A referenceless Nyquist ghost correction workflow for echo planar imaging of hyperpolarized [1‐13C]pyruvate and [1‐13C]lactate

Single-shot echo planar imaging (EPI), which allows an image to be acquired using a single excitation pulse, is used widely for imaging the metabolism of hyperpolarized 13 C-labelled metabolites in vivo as the technique is rapid and minimizes the depletion of the hyperpolarized signal. However, EPI suffers from Nyquist ghosting, which normally is corrected for by acquiring a reference scan. In ...

High-resolution Small Field-of-view 3 Tesla Mri with 32-channel Head Coil by Appropriately Selected Coil Elements Reconstruction Method

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 3-T MRI has been introduced into clinical examinations and is widely used [1]. High-resolution imaging is often essential as a clinical study for the diagnosis of diseases that show only subtle changes in the brain [2]. Since the 32-channel phased-array head coil offers a superb signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), high-quality images can be obtained when used with a 3-T MRI scan...
